What Level 1 actually does

Level 1 is the charger that ships with the car. It plugs into a standard 120V outlet and draws about 12 amps. A typical EV adds about 3 to 5 miles of range per hour on Level 1. A full charge from empty takes two to four days depending on the battery size.

Level 1 is fine for a Tesla in Naperville with a garage and a 60-mile daily round trip. The car sits overnight, picks up 40 miles, and goes back out. The math works. The same Level 1 setup in a Berwyn apartment with a street-parked car and a 50-mile commute does not work. The car loses range to cold faster than Level 1 can add it.

Why Level 1 fails in winter

Cold packs charge slowly. The BMS throttles incoming current until the pack warms. A Level 1 charger barely overcomes the throttling on a 20-degree January night. The pack sits at 30 percent in the morning because Level 1 added three miles overnight while the cold pulled out five.

A driver who tries to recover from 20 percent to 80 percent on Level 1 in a Chicago winter is looking at four days. By that time the car needs another charge. The math does not work for street-parked apartment dwellers. Recurrent Auto data shows that at 20F with cabin heat on, an EV retains about 70 percent of rated range. Level 1 cannot keep up with that drain.
