A Model 3 that won’t wake in a Chicagoland winter usually needs a 12-volt jump, not a pack replacement. Pack replacements are rare, expensive, and almost never the answer for a no-start in this cold. A flat 12V is the common cause. A 240V boost is the answer for an empty pack. Knowing which one you have keeps you from paying for the wrong job.
Two different jobs, two different trucks
The traction pack under the floor moves the wheels. It runs at several hundred volts. Pack replacement is a service-center job. The high-voltage system has to be de-energized by a trained technician before any panel comes off. That’s not a roadside call.
The 12V battery in the frunk wakes every computer, latch, camera, and the touchscreen. When that small battery flattens, the contactors never close. The car looks dead. A jump wakes it.
Why a winter no-start almost never means a pack replacement
January average high here is 31.6F. Average low is 18.8F. Annual snowfall is 38.4 inches. Those NOAA and NWS Chicago numbers are 1991 to 2020 normals. Lead-acid and lithium 12V batteries both lose punch in that cold. January 2024 dipped to about -10F at O’Hare on the 14th and 15th. A 12V that was fine in October is suddenly marginal in January.
Recurrent Auto data shows an EV holds about 78 to 80 percent of rated range at 32F, and closer to 70 percent at 20F with cabin heat running. The traction pack holds less. It doesn’t fail. A winter no-start that looks like a pack problem is almost always a 12V.

Run this check before you book anything.
- Black screen, no app response, handles won’t present: 12V.
- Doors work and the display warns about range: traction pack.
- Car wakes, then dies again right away: 12V that needs replacement.
- Car won’t accept a charge at a Supercharger after warming: pack might need service.
When the pack is empty, the car still talks. When the 12V is gone, the car looks asleep.
What a 12V jump costs versus a pack replacement
A 12V jump on site from an independent local operator is the small job. They confirm the model, the year, and the chemistry, then jump or replace the small battery. Lead-acid and lithium 12V packs aren’t jumped the same way. A wrong clamp can damage body modules. The operator bills you directly after the quote.

What a 240V boost looks like
Independent operators we connect you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car when the traction pack is the issue. Tesla gets a native NACS plug. That typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival promise.
That range is often enough to reach a home wall connector or a Supercharger. It’s a different tool from a flatbed.
How to keep the 12V from dying again
Turn off cabin overheat and Sentry Mode before you park. Both draw from the 12V while the car sleeps. A weak 12V can’t carry that load through a cold night.
Plug in if you have home charging. The DC-DC converter will top the 12V from the traction pack while the car is plugged in. A car that sits unplugged for a week on the street is the warning’s typical setup.
If the car has gone dark twice in a week, the 12V is at the end of its life. The operator we send can replace it on site. After the swap, ask them to test the charging system.
