A Tesla Model S with no power isn’t always a tow. A 240-volt boost can add range on a shoulder before you book the truck. A 12V jump can wake a car that looks completely dead. Run the checklist below before you decide the Model S needs a flatbed.

Run this checklist first

Start at the screen. If nothing lights up, the 12V is the first suspect.

  • Black screen, no app response, handles won’t present: 12V.
  • Doors work and the display warns about range: traction pack.
  • Car wakes, then dies again right away: 12V that needs replacement.
  • Display shows collision, smoke, or visible damage: tow, do not charge.

Two different systems, two different trucks. A 240V boost on a dead 12V won’t help. A 12V jump on an empty pack won’t help either.

Tell a flat 12V from an empty pack

The Model S has two batteries in two places. The high-voltage traction pack sits under the floor, between the wheels. The 12V lives in the frunk, under the carpet and a foam insert. Without 12V power, the contactors that connect the high-voltage pack never close. The car stays inert.

When the traction pack is empty, the car still wakes. The display still comes on. You get a range warning. You may not drive. The car is still talking.

When the 12V is gone, the car looks asleep. The airport-lot lockout is the classic version of that. Older Model S cars see it after a long sit at O’Hare or Midway.

What a 240V boost does on a shoulder

Independent operators we connect you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. Tesla gets a native NACS plug. That typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival promise.

A Model S on the shoulder of the Kennedy or the Dan Ryan with heat running and hazards on can be too low to reach a Supercharger. A boost can buy those last miles. The operator sets up, runs the cable, and waits for the charging window.

When a tow is the right call

A wreck, a fire concern, a damaged tire, or a pack that won’t accept a charge all push toward a tow. Don’t ask an operator to charge a battery that’s hot, smoking, or visibly damaged.

The Model S is heavy and the wheels free-roll in neutral. A flatbed with wheel straps is the right truck. Dolly towing a Tesla is rare. Don’t accept a hook-and-chain tow. The drivetrain isn’t built for that stress.

What a local operator does for the 12V

January average high here is 31.6F. Average low is 18.8F. Annual snowfall is 38.4 inches. Those NOAA and NWS Chicago numbers are 1991 to 2020 normals. A Model S on a Waukegan street during a January cold snap sees the same chemistry stress as a Model 3 in Oak Park.

Recurrent Auto data shows an EV holds about 78 to 80 percent of rated range at 32F, and closer to 70 percent at 20F with cabin heat running. The traction pack holds less. The 12V sags more. Both can flatten during a long sit.

IDOT’s Emergency Traffic Patrol, called the Minutemen, covers the major Chicago expressways. Dial *999. They help stalls, debris, and tires. They don’t publish EV charging.
