Rivian’s in-car highway assist drives the car on the highway. It is not a mobile rescue. An empty pack or a dead 12V on a Chicagoland shoulder still needs the local line. The two systems do different things.
What highway assist does
Highway assist is the driver-assist feature in the Rivian R1T and R1S. It steers, accelerates, and brakes on mapped highways. The driver stays engaged and watches the road. The feature reduces fatigue on long drives.
Highway assist requires a working high-voltage pack and a working 12V. The system shuts off if the pack is too low or if the 12V fails. Highway assist does not refuel the car. It does not jump the 12V. It does not bring a mobile Level 2 truck.
What roadside assistance covers
Rivian’s roadside program runs through a national dispatch line. The program handles 12V jumps, tire swaps, lockouts, and tows to a Rivian service center. The contracted vendor brings a flatbed. The vendor does not bring a Level 2 truck.
Coverage is included on a new Rivian for a set period and runs out after that. Past the included distance, the driver pays the per-mile tow fee. The vendor bills Rivian for the included work.
What a local mobile rescue adds
The independent operator we connect you with brings a 240V Level 2 truck. The operator typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That is charging time, not an arrival promise.
A typical call is a Rivian R1T on the Jane Addams (I-90) shoulder with 4 percent and a cold pack. The Rivian app routes a tow. The local operator pulls up, opens the charge port with a 12V jump if needed, and starts a 240V charge. The operator quotes before any work starts and bills the driver directly. Charge Pro does not set the price.
When you call which
Call Rivian first if your car is in warranty work, if the dash shows a high-voltage fault, or if the pack will not accept any charge from any source. The dealer path is the right one for those cases.
Call the local line first if the screen shows a 12V warning, if the pack is just low, or if you are stuck in a place a flatbed will struggle to reach. A downtown garage with low ceilings, a Lower Wacker ramp, or a private lot with limited access is hard for a flatbed.
