Why the Tesla 12V is not a jump pack

A Tesla 12V is a small battery built for accessories. It wakes the car, locks the doors, runs the contactors, and lights the dash. It is not built as a jump pack for a gas car starter. The cranking draw of a gas starter can pull the Tesla 12V below its recovery threshold in seconds.

A newer Tesla with a lithium 12V is even more sensitive. The lithium cells have tighter voltage and current limits. A starter draw can open a protection circuit in the 12V. The 12V stops outputting. The Tesla won’t wake until the 12V is swapped or jumped from a real pack.

What the traction pack never does

The traction pack never joins the jumper circuit. The 12V is the only battery that jumper cables can reach. The traction pack sits behind a contactor that is closed only when the car is awake. A Tesla that is off and locked cannot deliver traction-pack current to jumper cables.

A driver who hooks jumper cables to the Tesla 12V and tries to crank a gas car pulls current from the small battery, not the big one. The Tesla 12V drops. The Tesla may not wake after the jump attempt. The gas car may or may not start.

What to use instead

Use a real jumper pack. A lithium jumper pack designed for gas cars can crank a starter without pulling the Tesla 12V down. The pack has its own cells and its own protection circuit. The cables clip onto the gas car battery and the gas car starts. The Tesla 12V is not touched.

A portable jumper pack is the right tool for the job. Keep one in the Tesla’s frunk if you want to help neighbors. The pack charges from any 12V source. The pack is ready when needed.

What to do if you already tried

If you already tried to jump a gas car from your Tesla and the Tesla will not wake now, the 12V is probably below threshold.
