What to do first

If the car still rolls, get to the right shoulder. Hazards on. Stay belted unless you are in danger. If you have to exit the car, get out on the side away from traffic. The Move Over law (625 ILCS 5/11-907) requires approaching drivers to change lanes or slow down.

When a tow is the right call

A tow is the right call when the car has a high-voltage fault, when the pack will not accept any charge from any source, when the wheels are locked, or when the car is in a place a mobile operator cannot reach. A car on the shoulder of the Tri-State in active construction is a tow candidate. A car with a BMS fault code is a tow candidate.

Tesla’s roadside program can dispatch a flatbed for a covered tow up to the published distance. Past that distance the driver pays the per-mile fee. The local line can dispatch a flatbed partner for an out-of-pocket tow when the mobile boost is not the right call.
