Tesla roadside by Model isn’t a single thing. A flat tire, a lockout, a tow, or a depleted pack may each take a different path through the app. Tesla’s program is national. A local operator is independent and quotes you before starting. Here’s what each Model gets, and when a local operator is the better match.
What Tesla’s app actually shows
We couldn’t confirm a current, complete list of problems Tesla roadside will handle. Tesla’s app and Tesla’s own support pages are the sources that count. Read the terms shown for your VIN and location before you submit a request.
Coverage also isn’t the same as cost. We couldn’t confirm that Tesla pays for every request, every suburb, or every type of work. Ask who bills you if the displayed terms skip a Level 2 boost.
A button that says roadside assistance doesn’t prove a 240V boost is on the menu. The plan may still send a flatbed. That works for a wrecked car. It doesn’t add miles.
Model 3 and Model Y
Model 3 and Model Y share a bumper post layout for a 12V jump. The 12V itself lives in the frunk. Both cars use lead-acid or lithium 12V packs depending on year. Tesla made mid-production changes. Use your owner’s manual for that exact car.
For an empty pack, both Models use the same NACS plug. A 240V boost adds miles. A flatbed is the alternative if the pack won’t accept a charge.
Model S and Model X
Model S and Model X use a frunk layout similar to each other. Older cars before the 2021 refresh put the 12V under the frunk floor. Refreshed cars from 2021 on moved the jump posts behind a small cover on the driver’s side of the frunk, near the firewall.
Both cars are heavier than the 3 and Y. A flatbed with wheel straps is the right tow truck. Don’t accept a hook-and-chain tow. The drivetrain isn’t built for that stress.
What a local operator is good for
Independent operators we connect you with bring a 240-volt Level 2 source to the car. Tesla gets a native NACS plug. That typically adds 10 to 20 miles of range in 15 to 30 minutes of charging. That’s charging time, never an arrival promise.
That range is often enough to reach a home wall connector or a Supercharger. The operator quotes you before starting and bills you directly. They jump or replace a dead 12V on site. They handle Tesla and every major EV brand.

How to read the warning before you call
Run this check before you decide which line to call.
- Black screen, no app response, handles won’t present: 12V.
- Doors work and the display warns about range: traction pack.
- Car wakes, then dies again right away: 12V that needs replacement.
- Display shows collision, smoke, or visible damage: tow, do not charge.
Two different systems, two different trucks. A 240V boost on a dead 12V won’t help. A 12V jump on an empty pack won’t help either.
Cold weather reality for the Chicago area
January average high here is 31.6F. Average low is 18.8F. Annual snowfall is 38.4 inches. Those NOAA and NWS Chicago numbers are 1991 to 2020 normals. January 2024 dipped to about -10F at O’Hare on the 14th and 15th. Suburban Superchargers wouldn’t accept a charge from cold packs that day.
Recurrent Auto data shows an EV holds about 78 to 80 percent of rated range at 32F, and closer to 70 percent at 20F with cabin heat running. A Model S on a Waukegan street or a Model Y on an Elmhurst side street sees the same cold as every other Tesla.
What to tell the operator
State whether the screens are active, whether the car shifts into gear, and what message is on the display. Mention visible tire damage, smoke, unusual heat, collision damage, or a blocked traffic lane. Don’t open electrical covers or try repairs beside moving traffic.
Have a precise location ready. On I-90, name the Jane Addams or the Kennedy, the direction, the nearest exit, and whether you’re in a lane, on a shoulder, in a garage, or in a lot. On a side street, name a landmark you can see.
